It's kind of a funny story...
Melanie and Damon are both professional comedians. It’s how they met—Damon appeared in the comedy scene as the new kid on the block and Melanie welcomed him in. Did she also happen to notice his cute mustache and adorable smile? What? No! Absolutely not. ...okay, maybe. But she genuinely wanted him to feel welcomed.
But like good comedy, there’s a lot more to their relationship than laughs. There is honesty. There is vulnerability. There is an ability to communicate clearly and thoughtfully. There is authenticity. There is commitment and determination and a deep sense of pride.
In a world where conformity is still the name of the game, I have had the pleasure of seeing Mel and Damon choose themselves and each other throughout their wedding planning experience. From the venue, which they both fell in love with after performing at during a comedy festival, to throwing a watermelon off said venue’s balcony for their “unity smash,” they have continued to be true to themselves, their peace, and their joy even if it’s outside the “usual”. (And along those lines, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Damon’s custom cape to wear, which I highly suggest the rest of the world get on board with because DAMN)
I told Melanie the following morning as we packed up to leave Renwick Mansion post wedding shenanigans that I saw so much love, kindness, silliness, and raw emotion from their guests. I sincerely don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people cry from joy as many times as I did throughout their entire wedding day. And I know that is a reflection of the love they have built together, which only flows outward from their center.
